3 Nephi Chapter 10

Review of the survivors’ experiences:

  • First, they had experienced the great calamities of earthquakes, tornados, tsunamis, and fires that destroyed millions of lives and complete cities. Also, they must have experienced anguish of souls as they reviewed the wickedness of the land and realized that most of them had largely ignored the warning words of God’s prophets.

  • Next, they heard the Voice of Jesus Christ Himself reviewing with terrible sadness the consequenceof the behaviors of those who were most evil, and were told that those who were destroyed had played right into the devil’s hands—and that Satan and his wicked angels were rejoicing at their destruction.  In reverence, astonishment, and awe, the people were completely silenced for a time.

After Christ had given the people the chance to reflect and also to recover from their astonishment, He again spoke to them—His Voice was heard throughout the hemisphere.

He reminded them of all the opportunities He had given them to come unto Him—and how He had protected them. Using a simile—He said:

O ye people of these great cities which have fallen,

who are descendants of Jacob,

yea, who are of the House of Israel,

how oft have I gathered you

as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings,

and have nourished you.

Then Christ told them of the many times He wanted them to be saved and protected by Him, using the expression, “would I have,” but—as a people—they had rejected His wonderful offer of protection and tenderness. Those of the House of Israel in Jerusalem not only rejected Him, they persecuted and killed Him. Those in the western hemisphere persecuted and killed His prophets.

Next, Christ told them that they yet had a chance to be saved and come unto Him—if they repented with a full purpose of heart.

Then He reminded them—that although the House of Israel would eventually be brought back to the fulfilling of the covenants with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—there would be terrible personal consequences for those who choose evil over goodness.

Again the people began to mourn their losses—spiritual and temporal—and the loss of civilization as they knew it.

As the prophesied three days ended and the dark vapor faded, the after-shocks of the earthquake stopped. Great cracks in the Earth actually closed—and the people, as they again were able to see light, began to be happy. They gave great thanks unto the Lord.

The Nephite and Lamanite survivors to whom Christ spoke were more righteous than those who had been killed. No one who had part in the murder of Christ’s prophets or saints escaped justice.

Tragic consequences happened to the wicked but did not happen to the more righteous.

What had been prophesied had been fulfilled. Even early prophets testified of what would happen in the Promised Land at the coming of Christ, prophets who were progenitors of Nephites and of Lamanites
